Add this code to the end of any PHP file to make it self-destruct either on Refresh or exit (browser/tab close)

Useful if you’re using custom shell / mailer scripts.

Reset forgotten password in Linux Mint

So I have been a fan of Linux for a while - specifically Debian-based distro’s like Ubuntu and Linux Mint. The latter is my distro of choice, and I have it on 3 of my computers, as well as a dual-boot on my Roccat laptop.

Needless to say, if you have more than one computer with logins and so forth at some point you WILL forget a damn password. Figuring out how to reset a password in Linux can be a bit of a bitch if you don’t know where to start. Here’s a short tutorial.

1. Reboot your computer / Turn your computer on.
Hold down the Shift key at the start of the boot process to enable the GNU GRUB boot menu if it does not show. (It’s the black screen with 2 choices of Linux boot + ‘n mem test)
2. Press ESC at the GNU GRUB prompt.
3. Press e for edit.
4. Use the Arrow keys to highlight the line that begins with either ‘kernel’ or ‘linux’ depending on your distro version, and press the e key.
5. Go to the very end of the line and add rw init=/bin/bash
6. Press Enter (if needed) and then press F10 to boot your system.

Your system will boot up to a passwordless root shell.
Type in passwd yourusername
Set your new password.
Restart your system.

Wordpress Admin white screen of death. And how to fix it.
I came across this issue today. Wordpress website with a blank screen once you logged in to the Dashboard. The Dashboard menu/sidebar is visible, but the content area remains a white screen irrespective of what you click on.

Looking a bit deeper I came across this in the error_log:

PHP Fatal error: Access to undeclared static property: WP_Screen::$this in /home/xxxxxxx/public_html/wp-admin/includes/screen.php on line 706

So then.

Open blog/wp-admin/includes/screen.php

On line 706, you will see this statement:

<?php echo self::$this->_help_sidebar; ?>

If you change it to this:

<?php echo $this->_help_sidebar; ?>

the complete Dashboard will load again.

How to check if Freetype support is enabled on your hosting package.
FreeType is a software development library used to render text on to bitmaps - usually for Captcha. It is also used on some Linux distro’s.

To check if this is supported on your hosting package, create a PHP file and add this code. When done - open it in a browser.

Drupal Error: PDO::__construct():

*Warning*:
PDO::__construct(): The server requested authentication method unknown to the client [mysql_old_password] in *DatabaseConnection->__construct()

I came across this error today on a new #Drupal installation. This issue usually occurs after a PHP upgrade server side.

To resolve this, simply delete the MySQL db user and recreate it.
